Gulf Coast Climate, Hurricanes, And Emergency Preparedness
The Gulf Coast of the United States can sometimes have a volatile climate. There is the warm Gulfstream water current, and when that encounters cooler air masses, storms and hurricanes can develop. This is true for all tropical and sub-tropical areas, whether around Africa, or out in the South Pacific Islands. Consequently, those people who live along these coastal areas must always pay attention to hurricane season and what the hurricane forecasts are.
All your Gulf Coast areas have excellent Hurricane Warning and Tracking Stations. These are linked to the NOAA meteorological monitoring stations. Whenever there is a potentially destructive hurricane forming, there is usually plenty of warning given in the form of Emergency Broadcasts over TV and radio stations, and of course Internet warnings. These alerts will give you time to take advance precautions.
Anyone living in hurricane areas should have a basic supply of potable water, emergency lighting, and storable food always available. Water can be stored in milk jugs or special five gallon water containers. Canned food is easily stored. Emergency lanterns powered by propane, batteries, or even kerosene, are easily stored. Most emergency preparedness items can be obtained at your local camping supply store. Be prepared and survive in style!
